Beyond 100% Disability
If you are a veteran who has been rated 100% disabled by the VA, you may wonder – is there anything more I can claim at this point? With the maximum disability compensation, it would seem like there are no other benefits to pursue. However, there are still some special monthly allowances you may be entitled to above your existing compensation.
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
Veterans rated 100% disabled should look into Special Monthly Compensation (SMC). This refers to extra monthly payments above basic compensation for circumstances like:
- Needing aid and attendance from another person
- Loss of certain faculties (e.g. sight, hearing, limbs)
- Being housebound due to disability
- Having multiple severe disabilities with a combined rating exceeding 100% (SMC-S)
- Even at 100%, additional SMC allowances can grant you a higher monetary benefit each month. The VA will not automatically consider you for SMC – you have to submit a claim explaining why you qualify. Working with an accredited VA agent ensures you get the maximum allowable SMC for your situation.
Survivor Benefits
A VA disability rating also impacts the benefits available to your surviving spouse and dependents after your passing. The higher your rating at the time of death, the more your survivors can receive in Dependency and Indemnity Compensation.
Make sure to also enroll your spouse and children in CHAMPVA medical coverage, which provides low or no-cost VA health care to dependents of disabled veterans. Review your overall estate plan and insurance needs as well. An accredited agent can help explain all the survivor benefits you have earned.
While being rated 100% disabled provides maximum compensation on its own, do not leave extra monthly allowances and enhanced survivor protections on the table. Pursuing SMC and planning your legacy can help ease your family’s financial future. Contact an experienced VA-accredited agent to ensure you make the most of the benefits you deserve.
